How Many Muslins Does a Newborn Need?

A small stack of muslins is one of the most useful things to have ready for a newborn. You do not need a cupboard full: six to ten is a practical starting point, depending on how often you wash and how many you use each day. It is a shopping suggestion, not a medical requirement.

What do you use muslins for?

Keep one over your shoulder during burping, within reach for milk spills, and in your changing bag for little clean-ups. A lightweight square is easy to fold, carry and wash.

Do not drape a muslin over a pram or buggy to shade your baby. Coverings can restrict airflow, increase heat and make it harder to see your baby. The Lullaby Trust recommends a clip-on sunshade or parasol that allows air to circulate. Keep loose cloths out of your baby’s sleep space.

How many should you start with?

Try six to ten, then see what your own routine needs. A few can be in use, a few in the wash, and a couple ready for a trip out. If you wash every day, you may need fewer. If you regularly run out, add a small pack rather than buying a large supply before you know.

You can start with our pack of five muslin squares, or browse muslins and swaddles to compare sizes and intended uses.

What is worth checking before buying?

  • Fabric: check the composition, feel and care instructions rather than relying on words such as “luxury”.
  • Size: smaller squares are handy for wiping and burping. Do not assume every muslin is suitable for swaddling; check its stated purpose and size.
  • Care: choose something that fits your washing routine. A useful everyday basic should be easy to look after.

If you intend to swaddle, read our guide to when to start and stop swaddling and follow current safer-sleep guidance.

How do you care for them?

Follow the washing temperature and drying instructions on the product label. Wash before first use if instructed, change soiled muslins promptly and dry them fully before storing. Check for loose threads and wear as you would with any item used around a baby.

The little takeaway

Start with a manageable stack, keep a couple in your bag and let your routine guide any extras. Useful basics do not need a big price tag—or a big stockpile.
